Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia is a condition in men and boys marked by enlarged breasts. Breasts can grow unevenly, and in some cases the swelling is painful. Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance in the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Certain medications can cause this imbalance as can body changes during puberty or later in life. Gynecomastia can also be a symptom of more serious health issues, so it is important to be evaluated by a physician.
In some cases, gynecomastia resolves itself. In other cases, medication can reduce some swelling. If bothersome swelling persists, surgery can be helpful in eliminating male breast pain and reducing the size of male breasts.
Gynecomastia surgery options include liposuction, where excess breast fat is removed while leaving the breast gland tissue intact, and mastectomy surgery, where the breast gland tissue is removed. Often, this surgery can be done endoscopically which requires only small incisions. This keeps scarring to a minimum.
